Any woodworkers out there in the soup?
I just started wood working about 2 years ago. Currently I'm making some Adirondak chairs for a charity auction. Using a new wood for me, Redwood, very common and inexpensive and soft. So far it looks like the chairs will come out fine, of course I've made of a dozen now in the last year. They are easy, and people love them, so i keep making them.
Yep! Woodworking is cool ... But I am not woodworker ...
I have a dream to get all this stuff mitersaw, chainsaw, axe, tablesaw, router & table, reciprocalsaw, shizels, knives ... blah ... my tribe does not permit it for me ... :(
However, I have jigsaw :)
I can bake pirog, or baklava ...

Without the right tools I can be tricky. Does your tribe have problems with you using sharp instruments or spending the insane amount of money for the toys - er I mean tools? If it's the latter, refurbished tools are the way to go. I can get you a website that sells the tools for about 40% off if that would help.
I also cheat, in that me and buddy are buying tools that we swap as needed, that way all tools are buy one get one free - as some sage on soup was talking about once upon a time.
He-he! They told me that there are no place for tools in our cave :) Also ... they hates noise and sawdust :)
Anyway ... I have minimum instruments to fix minor problems in our place ...

maybe someday... for the moment i just work on my motorcyle (which is almost the same, right?)
but i use my friend's dad's tools, becasue we work on it at his house. so that works out real nice. try that arrangement, lobo - see if your next door cave neighbor has tools you could borrow sometimes
I did it in highschool and loved it, but since I cant afford the tools i havnt been able to do it since.

I am by no means a woodworker, let alone being to young to even be in college yet, but it is fun to do. When I was a freshman last year, I took this career exploratory course, and one of the shops was woodworking. I liked it a lot, but since I won't have a career in it, there would be no sense in me taking it through the rest of high school. I made a sign and a small shleving unit in that class, and I keep them in my room. :) It is a fun thing to do.
I'm not actually making stuff from scratch, but I'm interested in refinishing old furniture. My plate is full right now, but it's on my "mental list" I actually started an end table but didn't finish it.

My husband does. A couple weeks ago he got a new router and is like a little kid at Christmas.
He's going to make Sece a bed soon and do some neat things for her room.
From woodworking ... I can only brag about GREATEST DEATH STAR SPACE STATION ... - huge shed I builded on backyard at my previous planet ... Yeah ... it is really cutie ... not such huge, but it can store 4 bikes and bag of cans with turkey gravy ... this gravy we have got from previous planet owners ...
Also, I did some shelves ... house for chinchilla ... another house for chinhilla ... and I'll do one more house for chinchilla :)

If tool prices are an issue, look for tool king on the web, they sell refurbished tools from the manufactorer, still with warranty, and lets face it after one use they all look refurbed. I haven't had any problems with refurbs, and the price is nice.
MO - refinishing old furniture very cool to do, with great results, but what tedious work!!!!!
It's really satisfying when someone asks you where you purchased something, and you say I made that last year {like it was no big deal - of course it was though}.
The adirondak chairs usually make about $350/pr at the charity auction - that's also satisfying, as I don't usually sell stuff. I should be putting them together this weekend.
At least You can make adirondak computer case for nootch
