I am only 4'11'' and I don't mind it for the most part. BUT, it's like the 2nd thing people notice about me!!!! I HATE THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (at least I look my age, could pass for a little older, and not younger, and I'm not puny lookin either) I'll just be at work, and some random person on the elevator will look at me for a couple seconds and tell me how short I am! I ALREADY KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!! One lady who said that to me wasn't taller than me! I could've sworn to god she was about a half inch shorter!
One other time, I was in the caf at work (it's a hospital) I had some food, and one lady said something about it helping me grow. I've nearly stopped growing!!! (I might actually have another inch or 2 to go)
I CAN'T STAND IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm short too, 4' 10". It doesn't really matter to me because I just get shoes that make me look 2 in taller and I'm taller than some of the people in my H.S.

I'm 6'8", and the whole basketball stereotype is completely accurate. Despite how corny it is, I still get asked that at least once a month by a total stranger. It used to bug me, but I've now started responding by asking "Do you play minature golf?"

Whether you're overly short or overly tall, people still feel it's appropriate to point it out, which I don't think it is. It's like pointing out the freaks at a freakshow.

Diesel, I agree with you. It is actually rude to point out someone who is either real short or real tall. I also think you're right about the freak show example you gave.
The reason I think it's rude to do that is because the person already knows how short or tall they are. They don't need random people to tell them. Even being short, I could guess that some tall people feel insecure about towering over everyone. Is that correct? I get very sick of hearing how short I am, and I bet you're equally as sick of hearing how tall you are. (funny comeback you have! I bet they shut up right away!
If I saw a person of your height, Diesel, I'd only THINK to myself, "Man, he/she is TALL!" I wouldn't say a word to them. They already know, and I'm sure they don't want to hear it.
Another thing I find innapropriate is the basketball stereotype. Not all tall people play basketball, for christs sake!!!!
After nearly 16 years, all my life, of being short, wouldn't people logically guess that I've analyzed that by now? Standing in a elevator, and having someone say to me, "You're a short one!" bothers the hell out of me!!
I'm genetically short. Nobody in my family is tall (with the exception of my 10-year-old cousin who is a half-inch taller than me, but her father's really tall, but she's TEN and I'm almost SIXTEEN!

OMG....... at work on Wednesday, I was in the elevator when some random lady told me how short I am, which I already know, for christs sake!!!
She was trying to guess my height, and you know what she guessed? She guessed that I was only 4 feet tall!!
Ummm... y'right lady, I'm a hell of a lot taller than just 4 feet..... that was my height in 3rd grade..... add 11 inches on, and you got it.

I told her how tall I actually was, and that's how it went. The thing is, she was only an inch or two taller than me, which made it all the stupider.

This lawyer I know who is both black and tall ( 6' 7") I'm sure doesn't appreciate being asked if he considered playing basketball

As for you Panache, you may or may not grow. I grew from 5' to 5'5" when I was around 14. But you're 15, right?

Bad news, once a lady reaches menarche she stops growing. Sad but true. :ohboy:

I reached that stage at 11, and I still grew a little bit (but only about 2 inches)
Last summer, I went to an endocronologist to see if I could possibly get HGH (human growth hormone) I had X-rays of my hand done to see if my growth plates were closed yet. Turns out they are, adn I couldn't get HGH cuz of that, but I was told there's still a chance of me growing an inch or two by the time I'm 18.

MO> Correct. I am 15, but I'll be 16 in december

Panache> I was told my growth plates had fused when I was 15 and 5'8". I hit 6'6" before I graduated high school, and ended up at 6'8" sometime shortly after freshman year of college.
You might want to get a 2nd opinion. ;)

geez, i'm glad i'm normal

 sorry sorry, i couldn't exist

dan, your comeback is awesome, i would love to watch you use it. and panache, you should maybe come up with a good comeback too, just something to amuse yourself and shut them up. if it's a random person saying "you're a short one" i might just say "no i'm not" and let them scratch their head over it.

hopefully you'll grow some more, but even if you don't the way you'll make it through without cursing your height every day is to ahve a sense of humor about it - you have a sense of humor about everything, so that shouldn't be too much trouble.

anyway, i seem to be out of snappy responses, but if you get a good one that could make your interactions with those morons at least a little fun

Panache> I got a great comeback for you. When someone comments that you're short, you should respond with "Better short than rude."

It'll stop them dead in their tracks. :)
