View Full Version : sleep paralysis hallucinations

[does this go in dreams section?]

many people have probably experienced sleep paralysis to some degree... either while just entering REM sleep or exiting to wake up... you basically can't move.

well, some people have more than just that... hallucinations, pressure on the chest, out of body experiences, etc. some scientists believe it may explain some of the alien abductions you hear about.

In any case, i get really bad hallucinations (and the extreme fear that follows)

i will wake up seeing this dark figure in a hooded cloak. kind of an airy figure... and for some reason i believe that the reason i cannot move is that this witch figure is taking over my body (i also get pressure on the chest... as though she's pushing down) and if i don't move i'll be killed.

it's quite scary.... anywho, anyone else have this or know about this?

That's happened to me a few times. In the most memorable one, I felt an enormous pressure on my chest, and then I swear something made me arch my back and put my arms underneath it. :: shudder :: I don't think I slept much the next few nights.

OMG.... I have never experienced a thing like that before. It must be really scary!!
The closest I have ever come to that (would this qualify?) would probably be a few days ago, just upon awakening, I was hallucinating that there were a bunch of these psyhcodellic flower-type images all in row in the air. I kept my eyes closed because I was enjoying it. But that was NOTHING compared to the_scarier_one's hallicinations!!! I'd have the crap scared out of me if that ever happened! I haven't experienced it yet.
I sometime get sleep parylysis, like I won't be able to move for some odd reason. It's like my body is dissagreeing with my brain... I hate not being able to move.

OMG! I think I had a small bout with that a couple nights ago! I don't know if it was a dream or real life, but I was just lying there, unable to move. Also, my jaw was unable to move! I tried talking to test the condition of my jaws, and used a simple sentence that was, "Hi everyone" I could speak, but only to an extremely small degree, and it was scary! I couldn't move AT ALL.
I think that may have been the same morning I woke up with sore jaws.... Could I have been dreaming and clenching my jaws real hard?
I couldn't even tell if I was dreaming or not!

Experienced it and it scared the crap out of me for 1-2 minutes until my body woke up. My mind was probably not completely woken up because while this was going on (which was scary enough) I also experienced an "alien phenomenon". Yep, you heard me.

Sleep softly, and carry a big probe.

*sighs*
i've discovered that it happens (in my case) whenever i sleep on my back... but i like sleeping on my back! if i start falling asleep on my back, i immediately notice that i can't move and i start to panic... cause if i continue falling asleep i'm afraid i'll hallucinate or something (i'm not sure if i always will.. but my half-asleep self thinks i will) pooey.

Yeah, it pretty much only happens to me on back, too. (Er..this sounds somewhat bad.)

That's funny.... I tend to sleep much deeper when I sleep on my back. That's why I usually avoid doing that whne i have to wake up early that morning. I guess everyone's different......

Some people with sleep apnea have problems when sleeping on the flat of their back. The hallucinations are actually caused by decreased oxygenation in your blood stream. If you snore, choke/gasp or wake tired all the time, it might be apnea. Most sleep experts feel that people should sleep on their sides once they are full grown (babies are supposed to sleep on their back to prevent SIDS). You might want to do more reading on this The National Sleep Foundation has a website at www.sleepfoundation.org.

I've experienced sleep paralysis, but without hallucinations, pressure on the chest, etc.
But it was scary enough. I guess I woke up my body soon enough to avoid those effects.

I saw that same condition on tv, thats what makes some people believe that they have been abducted by aliens.

I made an earlier thread about my experience with this recently.. It's certainly freaky. It's only happened to me a few times; it seems to only happen if I go to bed SUPER tired, like after staying up for 2-3 days in a row.

It happens to my roomie too, and she knows she gets apnea.. she'd sometimes stop breathing for a bit in her sleep, but she didn't feel as tho she was abducted by aliens or anything like that; just paralysis.

Another friend of mine also had this happen except he got the alien thing. Some force was holding him down so he couldn't move or speak. Then a voice was telling him it was okay, stay still. His mom woke him up, saying he wasn't breathing.

Wow. That sounds pretty freaky... I never get anything like that, I never even dream usually...

It's a real medical condition, and you have experienced it you should talk to your doctor. A friend of mine had it and she said it was very frightening. She also told me that there are illustrations and paintings going back 100s of years showing the same thing! It's not a new thing, it's not about aliens. People have reported feeling there was a demon or "presence" in the room with them and they were being watched but could not turn to face it. The pressure on the chest was from the demon in these accounts. There should be lots of websites about this, forget the UFO stuff it's really a known medical condition and I wish I had the links to show you all.

I just posted a followup on a simular thread.

again, this is totally normal. Eveyone experiences sleep paralisis. only its rare that you are consciences of it. Dont fear it. it is strange and hardly fun to wake up sometimes not breathing. If you wake up and are not breathing you basically have sleep apnea with it. Thats hard on the heart and you need to lose weight or get a cpap theropy. but even thin people stop breathing at night and need cpap.
