View Full Version : Metallica and Napster

I went to the Yahoo chat this eve that "featured" the members from Metallica. I have never seen a more bias and slanted dicussion in my entire time on the net. The drummer I think, Lars, stated that there should be "policing of the internet and peoples computers"....WTF is that??? Doesn't this guy realize that his music was being traded via FTP and IRC before Napater was even created? Does he think people will stop trading MP3's just because he tries to shut down Napster? Napster doesn't do the trading they just offer a vehicle in which the users can trade. This guy needs to get his head out of his ass... http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/ut-oh.gif

Basically that would be a privacy issue if people's computers were policed. Lars is wrong in thinking that policing will help. It'll only cause more rebellion and serious privacy issues in return. He does have a right to be upset about his music being traded online without being paid for, but policing people's computer is not the way to do it. No one can tell anyone what they can and cannot have on you have on their computer, cause that person may very well have paid for the album.

I too was disappointed to hear how... how do I say this... clueless Lars is.
I am a big fan of Metallica. I have over one gigabyte of Metallica mp3s. (Ripped by me, I have the cds) Why they would intervene in this, I do not know. The record companies will do everything possible to stop music piracy... the only thing Metallica is doing is upsetting fans.
If there is one thing people become belligerent defending, it's their rights. Stomping on peoples rights and invading their privacy is definitely not worth doing to stop piracy.
Will we have to pack up camp and find yet another continent to settle on? (<- lame attempt at humor)
Well, I don't think I added anything new, useful, or interesting to this thread, but I vented some steam... cool. http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/supergrin.gif
I can't accept that, lemme try this again...
How about this: What do you guys think of mp3's, napster, and the whole music industry as we near the 21st century?
It has indeed become incredibly easy to obtain pirated copies of music today, but haven't people recorded music off of the radio for years now? Did that hurt the music industry? Do we really care? http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif
Throughout the entire history of the personal computer, pirating software has been very easy (in most cases). The software industry still runs strong. I still buy software.
I think something interesting is going to happen. I think the music industry will have to rely on the consumers' good judgment as the only means to stop illegal piracy. Would that really be that bad?
How about some really cheesy public-service commercials telling us that pirating music is wrong. http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

I can say for myself that mp3s have led me to purchase more CDs than I would have otherwise. I can't tell you how many times I've downloaded an mp3, liked what I heard but thought the mp3 file itself was bad, and went out and ordered or bought the disc.
I'll then go home and, legally, rip the CD myself to get a good quality mp3 and pop it onto my Rio.
Most times, I end up buying the album just because I like the music and I want better quality than what the person who ripped the mp3 used. It's easier for me to hunt down the album in a store than it is to try to hunt down a better copy on Napster, Usenet, or IRC.

You know how many people who want to police mp3's need to hear things like that? Most people that really like the music they hear will go out and buy the cd cause the sound quality of an mp3 just isn't quilte like the sound quality of a cd. I too buy the cd if I like the song I just downloaded in mp3.

I *hate* metallica. Their music sucks. However, I did load up napster and download every metallica mp3 I could find just to p*ss them off.

I would like to add that if I really like an artist, I'll go out and buy their cd. It's nice to have a playlist as well as lyrics sometimes. Plus, if it's a band I like, I don't mind supporting them so hopefully they'll come out with another cd in the future.
What metallica is doing is absolute idiocy--going after their own fans. I hope they waste several million dollars and alienate *all* their fans with this lawsuit. They can go back to really playing out of their garage again. Heheheheh

Well maybe it has escaped them, but now that every tom dick and harry has a cd burner or access to one, even if they were to bring down MP3s all people would have to do is talk to a friend with the CD and BAM you got yourself a nice copy for yourself.
This is Lunacy if you ask me, and maybe just a little bit more evidence that Metallica has indeed lost their "edge" and is leaning more and more toward their "boy band" buddies.

The CD burner issue isn't a new one by any stretch of the imagination.
Cassettes were being copied for years and years, and before that, records were being taped.
Copying a friend's album is nothing new. MP3 breaks this format by allowing someone in California access to copy the album of some guy he's never met in Chicago. It's basically easier to get access to the songs now than it's ever been.
However, I'm in complete agreement that Metallica did the stupidest thing possible by alienating their existing fans, and pissing off everyone else who might be interested in their music.

I wonder how many *legitimate* questions they censored during the Metallica chat.
Also, I wonder if Lars and Co. were actually the ones chatting and not a couple record execs.

Oh well, they've sold out recently anyway and their music sounds like something you'd hear from some boy band. Hell even "Whiskey In The Jar" wasn't original. That song is an old Irish drinking song that they decided to pirate and change a few lyrics of anyway.

Umm... JD? The entire double-album Garage Inc. (where "Whiskey in the Jar" appeared) was based on covers. "Whiskey in the Jar" was originally performed by Thin Lizzy. Not a single song on Garage Inc. was pure Metallica.
Anyways, back on topic... I just read this article, http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20000515/re/music_napster_2.html , which brought a whole new light on this topic.
In short, some college students were polled, and it was found that 58.5% were willing to pay $15 per month to use Napster. It was also found that 31.9% of the students paid less than $10 a month on music.
Could you imaging Time Warner having an internet-based subscription service?

I dunno if that's such a good idea for Napster, because then all those people paying for it will discover iMESH, or MIRC. Then the company (Napster) will be screwed, people will still get their mp3's from somewhere else, and the record execs will still be complete a-holes about it.

I just ran across this quote from RollingStone.com. This is Jason Newsted, Metallica's bassist speaking:
"I think the backlash is healthy," he says. "The more [attention] that's churned up, the more questions that are asked and the more awareness that's brought around is all for our benefit. The more the ignorance is quashed, the more people are gonna realize that we are right. It's not a free speech issue; it has nothing to do with that at all. If you're dad is a doctor or a bricklayer, is he going to get up at 6 a.m. and work ten hours a day and come home with nothing to show for it? I don't think he would. We have to be the ones to step up. It's for everyone, and it's for the future of music on the computer. Period."
You can find the entire article here (http://www.rollingstone.com/sections/news/text/newsarticle.asp?afl=rsn&NewsID=10715&LookUpString=227) .
There's no arguing with that. Napster is indeed an evil thing, but "bugger me with a bargepole if it isn't stonking good fun."

My favorite thing about Metallica...
That they finally took the last step on their way to officially "selling out" when they recorded a song for a soundtrack. It's not even that good of a song, and it took away any credibility they had left, not that there was much.
The whole Napster thing did nothing but annoy their remaining fans, and piss off any future fans. Not that I used Napster that much, but what they did in no way impacted my ability to get their songs on mp3.
Can you say alt.binaries.sounds.mp3?

May I take this opportunity to remind everyone that while Mr. Ulrich and the rest of the boys are boo-hooing about their MUSIC and how people obtain it, their BANK ACCOUNTS are SURELY not hurting by any STRETCH of the imagination.... At this stage of the game, ALL of them have become MILLIONARES twice over. WHO gives a CRAP how people are obtaining their material....

I bought every album upon it's release between Master of Puppets and Load, and bought Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning before ...And Justice For All came out.
I still have yet to buy ReLoad, mostly because Load sucked, and the singles that came off of ReLoad didn't sound any better. WTF was Marianne Faithful doing on that album?!?
Lars and Co. should concentrate less on the issues they have with Napster, their significant self-image problems, and all of the other crap that's taking their concentration away from what got them to where they are: making decent music.
They really haven't done that in a while.

the funny thing is new metallica sucks compared to old metallica. they should be happy some one is willing to take the time to actually download there crap, let alone pay for it. i'm sorry i loved metallica don't get me wrong but, lately they are really suckin and they just sit there an complain about napster like children. if i think a cd is gonna be good i'll actually go buy it instead of downloading it i mean really whats the point of paying like 20 dollars for a cd and you only like one song? so If they spent as much time thinking about there music and who they were instead of napster they might come out with something actually good for once in a while.
