My first interview in 7 months turned into my first job offer in that span.
I went to a LAN party this past weekend, and met up with some guys who I knew from previous parties. It was a lot of fun.
Anyway, on Monday morning, I was talking with one of the guys who was there, going over some of the things that had been going on over the weekend. He remembered that I'd been out of work since being laid off in December, and asked me various things about my experience and skills. Ends up that he has a friend who owns a small consulting firm who needed a managerial type to come in and help run the operations side of things to free him up to run the business side of things.
I passed him my resume, which he passed on to his friend. His friend called me in less than 2 hours and wanted to meet with me. He sounded like he was ready to offer me the job on the phone.
We met yesterday at his offices in NYC. He was really excited over my resume, plus the nice things our mutual friend had to say about me.
The job seems like a really good opportunity for me because it's a very small firm with a lot of plans for growth, and by getting in on the ground floor of what is essentially a startup company, I have the opportunity to grow. As a safety net for the startup part, he is backed by a law firm who owns part of the business, and they guarantee the salaries of his employees, so at the very least, I know I'll get paid every week.
It's a slight raise over what I was getting at my previous position, plus I'm getting benefits, 401k, and 3 weeks vacation. I would've liked slightly more money, but he said he just couldn't do it, and I really couldn't pass up the opportunity that was being offered. Since the money was definitely in the ballpark, I took the job.
I start on the 29th, and hopefully, that will be the end of a very tough 7 months. It didn't help that I got laid off on the day I was closing on my house, but sending out resume after resume with not so much as a callback was very disheartening.
In fact, this was only the 2nd callback I got in those 7 months, both in the past 2 weeks, and the first call didn't lead to an interview as of yet.
In all, I sent out close to 300 resumes since December. The job market really is that bad in this area, so I feel fortunate that my persistence paid off and I got what seems like it will be a good position.
