I am interested in buying a camera. Not a regular 35mm point and shoot, but a nice Nikon that has the option of manual or auto. I'm not sure exactly what to look for or anything (this is really something my SO wants and I want to surprise him).
I say Nikon because the people I know who have them have said they last forever and are wonderful. One friend told me what to get a while back but I don't remember what it was.
Thanks ahead of time!

So far I got out of him (he works 3 jobs) .....
Yes- He LOVES Nikons.
Auto- Because you can shoot manual (usually) from an auto camera but of course not the other way around.
If you want to give me more specific ?s I'll try to get the answers for you. ;)

We've got a nice little digital...no zoom or anything fun like that but it's good enough for us for now...It's an Olympus something or other...

I have an Olympus C-2020 Zoom, and it takes incredible pictures for a digital. Printed out on a photo printer, I haven't met anyone that can tell a difference between that and a 35mm print. I used to be a manager at a photo lab, so I know people who know photography.
I used it for all of my vacation photos from Aruba, and they came out great. I'm going to print some of the good ones out as 8x10.
