My dad is basically a jerk. He does all kinds of jerk-y crap almost every day, but today I feel like ranting about one specific thing.

Just keep in mind, he is a jerk ALL the time, so there is no need for anyone to defend him ;)

Last night he called me. Part of the call was spent whining about having lost his job. Mind you, he worked at that company almost 15 years and says he never ever liked it there. He also had two years warning that this was coming, and he's lucky it didn't happen much sooner. He just never bothered to get off his lazy butt and look for another job.

Then he tells me that he has to save absolutely every dime, and cannot afford to do Christmas presents this year. Now, take into consideration his wife makes a crapload of money, and has two spoiled rotten kids who I'm sure won't be getting one single less gift. He also got 4 months of severance, and expects to have another job within a month or two.

Also, don't think I'm a spoiled rotten kid as well, it's not like I get hundreds of dollars of gifts from him. Generally he gives me something about $20 which I don't even like. So it's really not the fact that I'm not getting a gift that bothers me. It's the fact that he's whining about not having any money to buy gifts.
So, at least that clinches it for me. He is only getting an invite to my wedding because he's my dad, and his wife is NOT getting one. My mom (who makes about 25% what he does) is chipping in for the wedding, and he supposedly can't even afford 20 freaking dollars.

Sorry to hear that...it must be hard to just have to stand by and bite your tongue with him...
I think you took the high road by inviting him to the wedding, good idea. What does your mom think?
What is the deal with his wife? Does she not "share" her money with him or something, or do they just live above their means? No offense, but sounds kinda strange. I take it you don't have a relationship with his wife and children.

Thats really too bad hermie. I mean I can see saying he will be cutting back, or something like that, but saying your not gettin a thing is kinda mean. I personaly dont think its the price of the gift that matters, but the thought put into it, and things like that, but it sounds like he just is being a pain in the arse . . . shall we probe him?

Sorry to hear that, Hermie. I guess I can't understand him, because I think it is a joy to buy presents for the ones you love. :)

 i dont see that one bit!!!

and to everyone else, all aformentioned punishments are approved. :D

now, the reason dad has to save every little penny is to support this lavish lifestyle, too. they have this huge, very nice house with a big yard. ride on lawnmower for that. and they just remodeled the dining room to match the f'ing china that his wife's mom gave them. and i mean the whole thing! new carpet, new wallpaper, new curio/hutch. and i wouldnt be surprised if they got a new table, but i haven't been there since holiday season last year. (mainly it is far away. he never bothers to meet me out where i live. mind you, he is always over at my grandma's house, who lives close. probably doesnt want to put extra miles on his lame-o pontiac...)

I get the impression that he is trying to appear outwardly normal yet he is possibly... whipped?

He needs the fart brigade to wake him up out of the fog he's in.
