Its a UBB Hack or Add-On. karma is when a moderator or an administrator awards you points for certain posts. Moderators and Administrators are not allowed to recieve karma.

That is correct.

If a user is especially helpful, or posts something that's valuable or beneficial to someone etc., you can give them a positive karma point. It's also been edited to appear under "Posts:" and within their user profile as well.

There is something like that available.. everytime they go a point down they are warned. I've heard about that but Alien or Ukliam should know for sure.

Same here. I tried to give eminem a positive point, but I wasn't authorized either. Alien's explanation is that you currently can give karma points only in a forum you moderate. However, it doesn't appear that I can even do that.

I did make the suggestion that we should maybe be allowed to award positive karma in any forum. After all, helpful posts should be rewarded, no matter where they're posted.

However, if any Overlord can give a point in any forum, then it is likely too many karma points could be awarded by multiple Overlords. I like the idea of having the lord(s) of the domain be in control of karma for their area. Better restraint and control. Makes it a wee bit more "special" don't cha know?

Here's the current situation, and settings:

Admins and Moderators cannot give or recieve karma points to each other.

Karma is set to work where moderators can assign them in their individual forums they moderate ONLY.

No person can get more than 1 karma point per thread (I think, or was it per message...) I think it's per thread...

I may change it so moderators can give karma points anywhere, even if they can't do other functions in forums they don't moderate. Let me think about it.

Receiving e-mail when a user gets bad points is a feature I chose not to use. I'm using karma in a more laid back way...

I also turned off the auto-ban, I like to do that manually...

It has to be something fairly serious, like continously disobeying things in the rules like spamming, threats, etc.

In 2 months, we've only had to 'ban' one user.

I always give a warning or three, but won't hesitate to remove the user if they're going to cause problems to the general enjoyment of this system by others.

I'm a proponent of free speech, except when a line was clearly crossed... Then it's time to rip 'em a new a- err, ban them.

Now back on the karma topic-

Maybe it would be a good idea to have the system auto-mail the user when a mod drops (or adds) a karma point because I had my one valued point disappear and I don't know why (was it my ban question??). Do you keep karma in the Alien cookie? If so, does accessing from different systems imperil it? I access Soup from three systems- and one, the Virgin box, does not properly handle cookies as far as I can tell...

No, it's not stored in cookies, it's stored on the server...

As for e-mailing a user on karma add/remove, I'd rather keep that function off if I can. The e-mail would occur too frequently, and we certainly don't need any extra load. http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

However it would be helpful to have some kind of history of who gave and took away. I hope that can happen at some point...

I *did* modify my profile - I tweaked my "interests" field a bit. I don't see as how that'd make a difference, but heck, it might be a bug, so I reckon I should mention it.

Tweaking my profile (I'm STILL trying to get alien passwords synced on my three systems) also seemed to have dumped my karma the other day... Alien, the trouble with karma must be in there...

I'll be the test- I'm currently at 2 karma points (I'm so proud). I'll go tweak my profile and preferences and see what happens.

Preferences didn't seem to change it...

I've worked and worked at this nagging bug, and I cannot locate it for the life of me.

I've rechecked the added code, removed all customizations to it (like Karma: in threads under Postshttp://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif etc. I cannot find this error, so I may have to remove the Karma feature for the time being..

I even contacted the original author of this additional functionality. To date, he hasn't returned any of my e-mails.
