View Full Version : Do you feel safe enough to fly?

Question of the day: Given the events of the past week, do you feel safe enough to fly on a commercial airline?

For me personally, I think I need some more time to gain the confidence to get on an airplane. Things are still very volitile, and I'd need to see things settle a little further before I could say that I'd be willing to get on a plane. Given the option, I'd either drive or take a train if either could get me to my destination.

I refuse to live my life governed by fear. I've always been the type to step up to whatever scares me, and knock it on it's ass. (Unless, of course, you tell me I have to ask the guy I like out..that's where I have problems.) You take your life in your hands every time you step out your door. ::shrug::

Yes, but with a caveat - will never fly for work related activities. Send me by train or boat if it's work related. I've had over 58 work-related flights in the past year, with all but 4 of them within a 6 month timespan.

Well, over here security is *always* very strong, so yeah .. I feel pretty safe on a plane. I feel less safe getting to the airport, especially the way my mom drives .. :P :P

Probably irrational fear, but I wouldn't fly at the moment, even out here in Australia. At least until the threat of terrorist reprisals has gone away.

I have actually never been a good flier, even before all this. Not that that's kept me from flying, but I've always hated it.

I think eventually I'll fly again, though. However, with all the added security and stuff (which I do think is a good idea), short-haul flights probably won't be worthwhile anymore. Going to Cleveland from now on will probably be via car or Amtrak.

i flew once and you'll never get me up in one of those sardine cans ever again.

i never thought it was safe, even before all this stuff happened.

the odds are still slim that anything could happen. even though something did happen makes no guarentee that something will happen again. I'm going to san fran in november and I probably won't give a second thought to terrorists. I'll be leaving through Providence and not Boston though.
There's risks with anything, and living in fear of them all doesn't seem to outweigh a life of doing nothing.
I'm probably more afraid of the new security than anything else. I always thought it was overly strict in the past, but if it's getting moreso, than I wonder what types of things I can bring. Needless to say I won't be carrying on the battlebot controller system. That looks way to fishy to some minimum wage airport securty employee.

They have been confiscating tweezers, nail clippers, and shaving implements, among other things...

Yeah, I reckon I feel safe enough to fly, but I never fly anyway so it doesn't really affect me.

I don't particular feel safe going on an airplane. I was going on a trip this november to Florida but that's out of the question. But, I am however booked to go to CA in December already. I'll take that flight but I won't be happy doing that :(. I haven't seen my nephews in a long time. I haven't even seen the youngest at all yet!! so I hope I sleep through that flight. Hopefully by then things will be calmer. If things are worse and there are more issues by then I'll pay my mother back for the tickets and stay home. My safety comes first! :hmph:

i think odds are slim enough of anything happening, let alone happening on my flight, that i wouldn't be worried about it.

of course, i'm not presented with the situation right now, so things could be different

Okay, I amn't trying to insult, or cause offence to anyone here, but don't you think by not flying you could be (a) letting the terrorists 'win' so to speak, and (b) helping lead to what could be the imminent death of the already ailing air transport industry?

Hey - that's a really good point bob!

Yeah, it sure is. But there is still a risk (though it's a small one with the huge amount of security at the moment) on American domestic travel...

Theres always a risk though ...

More of a risk than usual. Didn't the Americans bust a planned attack for tommorrow? or am I just full of sh*t?

I don't know about tomorrow, but there have been some murmurings in the news that evidence has been found of further planned attacks on september 22nd (this saturday) and october 13th... how can they be so sure these planned attacks aren't going to actually happen???? :(

Hermie: September 22nd is tommorrow. ;)

It's possible, but unlikely. I guess if you want to be safe, you won't fly tommorrow.

Well, we'll just have to wait and see wont we?

Bah to you. Why must we live in fear, the cowards who commited this atrocity are the ones who should live in fear!!

I didn't hear anything about problems with planes tomorrow. What I heard was chemical/biological weapons

Last weekend I flew from Orlando to Washington DC and back again. I'll admit to being a bit nervous, especially since the return flight was only hours after we started bombing Afghanistan, but if I didn't feel safe I wouldn't have gotten on those airplanes. Security at the airports is tight, I even got my bag emptied and searched. They're being thorough, and passengers are aware. I don't think we should let fear stop us from flying, or anything else.

Did they confiscate anything or stuff? And what sort of stuff were they confiscating off others? :)

Nothing of mine was confiscated, but they confiscated tweezers from a girl that was flying with me.

...tweezers?

WoppaMan

Yup. Even the smallest things that might have points on them are taken by the soldiers and you don't get it back. So if you fly, put anything sharp in your checked bags.
