Caught this thread (http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=39&threadid=490400) over at AnandTech, and thought it would be a good idea to pass onto people over here.

Also, you may want to check out my post (http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?s=a249840746358 cf5f1e5e87fb0729c59&threadid=173368) over at [H]ardOCP on discussion of this.

It may serve as a real eye-opener. I'd really hate to see someone get into trouble for trying to do some good, but the warnings are there, and should be heeded.

Wow, that scared the crap out of me.

From what I read on this, it seems that more and more organizations are cracking down on non-business related use of their machines. While I think criminal prosecution is excessive, I do think that users should still ask permission to do anything other than the intended use of machines they do not own.

Exactly.
You would think it would be common sense by now that if something doesn't belong to you, you should ask permission before using it. Duh!!!

PS. Glad you're folding again, JH. Thought we lost you there for a minute. http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Yeah. I was AFK to spend the 4th with my family, so I had my computer off for the week.

One major difference is that there was a personal gain in that project - also note that it was a state entity, a private company would probably just sack you !

Charles> True, but the point that seems to be getting lost is that you shouldn't install it on someone else's property without advance permission.

With the exception of the Stanford projects (F@H and G@H), every other major DC project has such a disclaimer saying that the client should not be installed on machines that are not owned by the indifividual running the client.
See my linked thread above to [H]ardOCP for the related links and quotes pertaining to such from the various DC sites.
