like when you get 500 posts or something, you get access to the hive mind, full of all the knowledge of the universe?

Maybe access to a private forum, like Admins and Moderators or M00?
Battle.net has something like that in Diablo and D2, where you have to be a certain class or a certain level to enter some of their chat channels.

That's the point. The reason those forums have no activity is because not that many people have access to them.
The more people get the priviledge of access to certain "restricted" forums, the more activity the "restricted" forums will see, hence the more interesting they become.
Think of them as a "newbie-free haven" for those users who have shown a willingness to help build this BBS, and stived to make a substantial contribution to the success of the BBS.

Hey, it's just an idea.

but dan we don't want all the interesting conversation to be in a restricted channel. if we do.. all the people w/o access will be bored w/ this forum and leave...

think the restricted rooms are for alien to give us mods instructions or other crap like that..

i do see your point about a newbie-free zone, but that takes your interesting posts away from the people in between newbie and "the guys that reached 500" posts...

there is the option of telling them the irc channel we idle at... but that seems more like a punishment rather than a reward...
