I apologize in advance if anyone finds this post to be a bit on the grosser than gross side. I tried not to go into much detail, but it was difficult seeing as how I need to explain what’s going on with my mouth. http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/indiff.gif
I was wondering if there are fellow Soupers who continue to have their wisdom teeth? I do, because while having my teeth straightened via orthodontics, it was required I have four permanent teeth removed. This left the required amount of room needed for wisdom teeth to grow in, therefor I was never told I needed to have them out. I’m slowly becoming the only one I know to have them, and I need some advice. My wisdoms are easy to handle for the most part, but every so often my bottom two wisdoms have a growth spurt and *boom*, BizkitBabe is in a ton of pain. I get canker sores on the backs of my cheeks and have open sores from where the teeth have punctured the skin due to growing in. When this happens I try and brush after every meal, swish with hydrogen peroxide at least three times daily, and use Oragel to minimize the pain, but I’m starting to wonder if it’s worth all of the trouble. At the present time my entire right, bottom jaw is in so much pain it’s nearly impossible to chew using that side of my mouth and it’s to the point where I’d rather not deal with it anymore. http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/bawling.gif
My first question to you Soupers is, if you do in fact have your wisdom teeth, do things of this nature occur for you and if so, how do you handle the pain? My second question is, if you’ve had them out, how did your procedure go and how long did it take you to recover? I’ve heard quite a few stories about peers having their wisdom teeth pulled, and they haven’t been pleasant over all. I’m a *huge* baby, and I’m worried about taking it that far because of that. I’d like to keep them if at all possible, but it’s getting to be too much. Also, I might mention I’m not the best at taking pills, thus, I might have an issue with taking painkillers during the recovery process. Share your stories please. I'm nervous ovah here! http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/frown.gif

It wasn't too bad. I had it done when I was 18...or maybe 19. Somewhere in there. They put me out for the procedure, and I was really out of it until I'd been home for a couple hours. My mom only let me have 1/2 a pain pill at a time (she's a pharmacy tech so is very worried about painkillers becoming habit-forming, she sees it all the time), and they weren't very big to begin with, so it shouldn't be too hard for you to take them. I think I only even used them for a day or two.
If I had been a good girl and slept until the next day, all would have been well, but I felt good enough to spend the entire rest of the day exercising my jaw (read: talking on the phone), so then it swelled up...although not so badly that strangers would point and snicker at me, or anything.
The next day, I felt well enough to spend the day Christmas shopping with a friend, and the day after that I was back at work.
I think the fear of the unknown was the worst part of the whole thing...but the actual experience was not too bad http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/wink.gif

Just a quick post for now...
BB, I still have all four of mine. Similarly, I've had the four associated permanent teeth in front of them pulled (all at the same time), to make room for the wisdom teeth. Fortunately, I haven't experienced any growth spurts or pain. I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing such terrible pains.

I had all four out at once and it really hurt- but I think it's a good idea to prevent problems down the road

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled almost 3 years ago (2 of them were impacted ), and to be perfectly honest, it wasn't NEARLY as bad as I was expecting. I was perscribed a whole bottle of Vicadin, and I think I only used like 4. This was done after having braces for 5 years (wtf, 5 years, and my teeth were actually not as bad as my brother's who only had braces for like 3.5 years!) and, in my opinion, getting braces tightened left me more sore (and for longer) than having my wisdom teeth pulled. My biggest problem with the process was the couple of weeks where there were pretty much holes in my gums that food could get stuck in, that wasn't very fun. The cool thing though, when you tell people that you've just had your wisdom teeth pulled, they practically become your servant because they think you're in so much pain (but of course, being the nice guy that I am, I never took advantage of that http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/wink.gif)!
[i] Oh yeah, and I was completely out with anesthesia when they pulled mine.

well lets see. we'll start with my sister
she is the BIGGEST BABY!! i remember she had all 4 out and was on the couch for a week eating ice cream. but she cries when she gets a hangnail - she was 18 when she got this done btw
now my friend who just had them done was up and about the NIGHT that he had it done. he was a little swollen but that was all. they gave him 20 vikadin so im sure that helped
he even had a party the night after http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/lol.gif
so it's up to you - i think its better to get it over with and be in some pain for a week MAX then be in all this pain for no reason

Do you think its necessary to have your’s out despite the available room? I’ve also heard the younger you are at the time of surgery, the easier it is to recover. You don’t appear at all worried that they could cause issues later in life, or am I wrong? I know the doctors say I’m in no hurry, and that as long as I keep them brushed and healthy I have nothing to worry about as of yet, but I feel as though I’m delaying the inevitable in a way. Do you think that way BRiT?

i got mine taken out a year ago this past april. took me about a week to fully recover. i had a lovely green bruise on my jaw tho. after they did it, though, i woke up swinging and punching and swearing and cussing, calling everyone a gd mf'er. my mom was a bit mortified. but overall it didn't hurt at all. and that includes jumping out of the chair semi concious ripping the iv out of my arm and stuff. after i took the week off work and school and just slept and played unreal tournament. and they give good drugs (not recreationally... well, to some people...) for the pain...

bb, i had the exact same situation as you - i had four other ones out to make room for my molars. he said they were coming in straight and wouldn't have to come out. i haven't had any growth spurts or serious pain... yet. some days it hurts a little, but kinda a good kinda hurt.
anyway, the doctor told me when i got my air force physical that they may have to come out anyway, and that it wouldn't make any difference in how i chew or anything because i'm getting along fine without them now, as they haven't come in all the way yet
i've seen many wisdom teeth operation people after after their operations. in face, two of my friends had it done after christmas during vacation. one of them was absolutely fine, and soemthing went wrong with the otehr one and he looked like a chipmunk for a week. but it wasn't a huge deal, and the painkillers really help
and trust me, if you are in pain taking painkillers won't be a problem at all. you'll get *real* good at taking pills http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/wink.gif
but seriously, if they have to come out they have to come out. there's really not too much you can do about it either way. ask a dentist for the expert's opinion. if they can stay then awesome. if not, then you'll get them out. it'd hurt worse eventually if you didn't get them out anyway.
best of luck, and just don't worry about it and it'll all be okay http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Hmmm I had all four impacted. They put me out. I swear there is nothing like the feeling of waking up from being knocked out. I guess im wierd, but I love it. Anyway, If its causing you too much pain to deal with getting them out wasnt a big deal for me and you really might want to concider it. Anyway good luck with the pain. Hopefully it goes away fairly quickly. http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Well I hope that I won't need to have my wisdom teeth removed. The whole procedure of having the teeth in front pulled, was done back around 1987. The wisdom teeth have grown in and been there since late '87 - early '88. You're right, I'm not concerned about them at all. If something should happen, then I'll worry about it then.
The dentists I've been to since then have been extremely surprised to hear that I have my wisdom teeth. All the while, my sister's wisdom teeth barely show up in her x-rays.
Since it seems like you're having issues with them now, I'd have them taken care of if it isn't too much of a hassle. Easier to do in the summer time when home then during the college year when away.

Just last week I had all four wisdom teeth pulled because they were pushing on my other teeth and making them all crooked. I had braces, now I might need them again. So go through the pain of getting them out. Either that or go through the pain of having braces. Braces take up to four years, getting your wisdom teeth pulled, an hour. Plus you get to keep them.
And because they aren't imppacted, it will prob just take only half an hour. Plus if you let them keep growing you're going to have to keep pulling more permanant teeth out. Do you want to be toothless? Not only will you still have your wisdom teeth but dentures to.....

First of all, as I stated previously, my wisdoms are not in any way applying pressure on preexisting teeth. I would know if they were and just to be certain, I’ve inquired about it as a secondary precaution. If that were the case, I would be in an oral surgeon’s chair so quickly, he or she wouldn’t know where I had come from. Secondly, again as I stated previously, I’ve had braces. I know what’s involved with that, not to mention the pain involved, and I’m never getting them again. I’ve already decided that for myself. The *only* problem I’m aware of having with my wisdoms is that my cheeks and gums aren’t understanding the concept of new teeth growing in after so many years.
My parents informed me that if my canker sore and gums weren’t getting any better after we arrived home from vacation that I’d need to consider my options (meaning have my wisdoms removed), and wouldn’t you know that that was all that devilish pain needed to hear. All heeled in a matter of days after hearing that tiny, insignificant comment. Even my canker sores and gums are wusses! http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/lol.gif Now that I’m pain free I’m thinking illogically again and am thinking I’ll be keeping my wisdoms around for a bit. http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/wink.gif Will I ever learn? http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/rolleyes.gif

I have two of mine already and the third it coming through at the moment, it is hurting a hell of a lot and I have had lots of pain around that area and major headaches for the past few days. I have not had any teeth out to make room, and don't think I would have any of my wisdom teeth out unless totally necessary. I only think this one is hurting more that the other two because the others were both on the same side, and this the second one at the top but on the other side.
So hopefully, like you, the pain will be gone in a few days http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif
Glad you are feeling better anyway.

I had all four of mine out cause they were pushing on my teeth on the bottom jaw, and starting to push on my nerves on the top jaw. I had to get them done. But, to answer whether or not you should get them out, if they are pissing you off now, then it may be worth the while. I did have to take pain medication for a couple of days and just not move my jaws too much for the week but the pain wasn't too much for those few days and for the rest of the week I just ate soft food to not put too much pressure on the stitches. http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/frown.gif
It might at least be worth asking the dentist his opinion and find out concequences for both keeping them in and taking them out. That way you can make the best decision for you http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif. I know a couple of people that kept them in and have no problem with them except they tend to bite their tongues and the inside of their cheeks more often.

Biz -
I don't know why anyone would go through so much pain. Wisdom teeth tend to have only a single, straight root - making them exremely easy to extract. (I did a lot of research on this prior to two of mine coming out). The pain after extraction is virtually completely forgettable - you'll be right as rain in a day if not less. The only thing that's left after that is the extremely odd "gap" feeling... but I'm sure you'll remember that from when you were a kid.
IMO I reckon you stand to gain a lot by having them removed - remember the whole side of your head throbbing with pain when it's bad? You'll never have that again... and you have very little to lose. Of course, if some half baked notion of "completeness" is more important than weeks of agonising pain... *shrug*.
Huh! I had very stupid expirience with my wisdom teeths.
I was living on my previous planet. I decided to move to this planet. I did some stupid things to reduce expences. But stupidest was :
I got an import american dentist and ask him to improve my mouth, coz I know how expensive it in America. And, this man told me, that I have bad wisdom teeth, and I need to remove them, coz any dentist in america will do it with me. So ... I agreed and he removed 4 wisdom teeth from my mouth, also, he made a lot of root chanels etc. Ha! At the first wisit to a dentist he ask me: Why do You have one wisdom tooth with filled root channels? So, he removed this 'last' wisdom teeth from my mouth. I put this 'twice removed stupidity' tooth to small container at my nightstand. And teeth fairy ... such a greedy woman ... this awesome tooth has at least $25 worth ... she did not take $1 for it ... :bawl:

All is pretty well right now.. The meds are working pretty well. Still awkward/hurts to eat, but I think i'm healing nicely.. Had some bad "liver clotting" the first night, but that's not a story I'm into telling at the moment!
I get my stitches out in a week, I hope I can eat much better in the next couple days, I'm DYING for some good food I can TASTE!
Congrats ... You are in 'Wisdom Free Club' now!
Hope, that everything will be OK!
