View Full Version : Leaving my job

Just handed in my 2 week notice. I just couldn't take it anymore. All of the corporate crap, all of the policies in place that do nothing but prevent you from doing your job.
One thing's for sure: I don't plan on taking any more jobs on Wall St. anytime soon. Too many big corporations.

I'm looking at some opportunities with some smaller companies and startups. I have 3 offers on the table, and one that I'm waiting for. The one I'm waiting for is the one I really want. It's with a larger company, but a new startup division within that company. All of the benefits of getting in on the ground floor, plus all of the stability of an established company.

The reason I decided to leave before I had something firm in hand is because leaving now saves me from a lot of headaches that I'd have to deal with if I stayed even a week or two longer. This way, I'm saving myself from some pretty stressful moments.
The timing is also perfect. After I leave, I have a week off to take care of the many personal things I've let fall by the wayside over the past year. I then go on vacation for a week, and hopefully come back to the job offer I'm waiting for, ready to start right away.

Just venting a little... sorry.
So, what do you guys think?

i'd be a little hesitant to leave the first job before i secured the second, but hey, that's just me. i'm sure all three of those companies will be banging the doors down to hire you anyway, so i doubt you'll have any problems, plus your reasons for leaving now make sense.

go for it and good luck - you deserve it! http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

I always wondered where my company fell on that list.
#54, #3 in the Securities category.

Still, it's been nothing but a headache for the past 4 months.
My biggest complaint about the whole thing is that my manager busted his ass to get me a transfer to another department. For all of his effort, the best he could do was to move me at the end of the summer, and even then, I'd be moving from my management position to an entry level position in the new group.

So, my choice was:
a) wait a few months to get put into a new group as a peon
or
b) leave now, make more money at a new job, and be placed in a position where I'd be working on the things I want to be working on.

The choice was easy for me.

Keep in mind that I'm one of many who are leaving the company recently. I came to find out that one of the other shift leaders in my group are giving their 2-week notice this afternoon as well. We both have the same end-date.
Gave me a good laugh, but it illustrates that there are some very serious issues in this company right now.

I'm thinking of the same thing...I work for a small company but the hours + my commute are murder. They can't change my hours and I cant' deal with these horrendous 15 hour days (4 hours of commute each day) and so little time off. I get so little sleep that I get sick all the time and am already out of sick days for the year.

I like the people and don't mind my job but the hours are insane.

Good luck in your new ventures, Dan! Sounds like you were at the end of your rope. Usually it really is better to look while you're still employed, you can negotiate the extra week in between etc., and it seems like a lot of employers think they've "got you" if you need a job, as opposed to just want a differnt job. In any case, the job market is good right now, I'm sure you'll find something more to your liking http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

The only problem is that with my current hours, interviewing around my work schedule is a near impossibility. I had to take a 1 1/2 hour lunch the other day for a lunchtime interview. Only problem is that they only give us 30 minutes for lunch.
Luckily, no one noticed I was gone.http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

And I certainly can't keep using up my sick and personal days to keep going on interviews, especially since they require 1 week's advance notice for taking personal days, and I usually find out about the interviews a day in advance.

Dan,

After working 25 years for the most powerful corporation in the world, I can only offer a quote from the sleaziest prez of all time:

"Ah feel yor pain."

Good luck, dood, and enjoy your vacation.

I too can attest to the "limitations" that are imposed upon a person by the mega/multi-national corporations. I have worked for 3 different "billion-dollar" revenue corps (1 fortune 100 + 1 fortune 500) and they all were pretty well top heavy and overly beauracratized. This severely impeded the effectiveness of the people with the "hands on the oars" so to speak.

I spent quite a few years in the #1 & 2 industries on the following list. #1 & 2 should be a single industry entitled "Oil & Petrochemicals" but it would be too lopsided if they listed it as such.

I can offer 1 bit of advice, if you want a specific job, find the person who makes the decision and bug the hell outta them. They'll give you the job so you'll leave them alone.

Hope you make out well, and uhhh, watch that caffeine http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/blah.gif

To test out my theory, I'm leaving 15 minutes early today to see if anyone notices.

I've actually left for a doctors appt for 2 1/2 hours but nobody noticed... http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/lol.gif http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/lol.gif

but then, I have a pager and cell phone, so anyone that paged me got an even faster response than if I had been at work and busy.

Wonder if it would work as well at the beach???.......

Aruba!!

Wow, I sure wish I got to go on a vacation like that sometime.. I've never been to any islands in my LIFE. http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/frown.gif

If I get the chance, which is the best to visit first? The view, things to do, etc.

Thank you!!

This is my first time to the islands, but I've been a ton of other places. My girlfriend went on a Carribean cruise a few years back with her family. She didn't like the Bahamas or Bermuda much; too touristy.

I'm still looking to make my way to Arizona. Warm weather all year, no really cold weather, beautiful scenery, relaxed attitutudes, and still possible to earn a decent living.
I would honestly say it's one of the most beautiful states in the country, and I've been to plenty.

I would also say that you should check out Brazil (my father's side of the family is from Brazil) if you ever can. I liked Rio de Janeiro, but there's too much crime and poverty there. The inland towns and cities are beautiful and historic. I especially enjoyed Belo Horizonte and Auro Preto.
Sao Paolo is too industrial to really be considered a vacation spot, IMO.

Well, yesterday was my last day and I'm glad it's all behind me now.
I have the next week off, then a week in Aruba before I start my new job. Life is good!
