I would use a lot more machines at work - about 100 PIII600+ currently on for over 18 hours a day running a telnet client but I read on the HardOCP board of a guy getting the sack for breaching security - basically I decided not to put the client on any business critical machines - just IT department and development machines, mind you it would add a lot of units http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/naughty.gif

Yeah, that's an important sticking point with DC projects.

I'm just stating this for the benefit of everyone.

If you're going to run F@H on a computer that you don't own, get permission from the owner of the computer FIRST. We want everyone to contribute, but not at the risk of employment.
There has already been more than one occasion where people have been fired from running F@H on their work systems without their boss' permission. We don't want anyone to lose their job, so if you're thinking about running it on work computers, make sure your boss says yes first.

I think what we're looking for, other than the extra effort on the part of those who can add more systems, is to see if we can extend the reach of our team to new members.
Perhaps, each of us can suggest to some of our coworkers that they might want to get involved in the project, and come by AS to see if they like it?

From the start, we've had two goals in mind for the project. First, we wanted to be able to do some good with our spare computing cycles. Second, we wanted to try to gain some well-deserved recognition and exposure for our host, Alien, for giving us this wonderful community to meet and socialize in. Let's see if we can accomplish both.

Thanks PIT. If you can get even one person, that's a huge accomplishment for both Alien Soup, and Folding@Home.

As an idea as to how one person pulling another on can make a huge difference, we need to look no further than ukliam and Charles.
Individually, either one of them are a huge addition to the team, but without ukliam, Charles may never have known about Alien Soup, or may not have gotten involved in the project to the extent with which he has. One person contributing a great deal turned into two people contributing an exceptional amount.

Well, our team is approaching an impasse, and I thought we should discuss what to do next.

We're currently ranked #23 overall. At our current rates of production, the highest we can hope to achieve, if the other teams stay where they are, is in around 15th place.

I'm sure that most of us would like to get as high as possible, but to do that, we'll need to ramp up production. I'd love if we were able to get possum37 and Prox back into the mix. WaterB is back, which will help us trememdously, but we can always use more.

Aside from getting more from what we have, our only other option is to add to what we have. I don't really expect for each member to add to the machines that they're running on, so adding new members is the next best thing. I have a friend from another BBS who I'm trying to lure over here, along with his test platform of 30 workstations and a mess of dual-CPU servers. http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/wink.gif

At this point, I don't think we can afford to lose any more members without taking a few new ones on. We've gotten this far by solidarity and perseverance. We have to keep going on this path, and introduce some fresh blood into the mix. Together, I'm convinced we can make this happen.

Yah, I know it's not the client itself, but it only freezes up when I'm running F@H...it's so weird.

And yes, I uninstalled and deleted the folder, just like you outlined.

I'm leaving for the gym in a few minutes...going to start it up again before I leave, and see what happens while I'm not sitting here doing other stuff.

If you have to shut it down in the middle of a frame, will it start the whole frame over when you start up again, or pick up where you left off?

These bigger proteins seem to be too much for my computer to handle http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/frown.gif

I believe that when you exit it during processing of a work unit, it will start over again from the beginning of the frame you left off on.

What CPU do you have? What speed? What is it overclocked to? How hot is it running when idle? How hot is it running when under full load?

In any overclocking situation, by definition, you sacrifice a certain level of stability for extra performance. A program like F@H will put extra stress on the CPU, possibly pushing it past the stability threshold. If it's causing the CPU to heat up to the point where it's locking up, then the CPU is running too hot, even if that temperature is well within spec.

Well, I managed to get 3 frames done in 3 hours. That's not fast enough for me to get a WU done in 4 days, even if I left this running 24/7... http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/frown.gif

I've got a Pentium 233, and yes, it's overclocked but I don't know how much. That is a good point though, I will see about un-overclocking it, but that still won't help the fact that my CPU isn't quite fast enough.

Once I'm more financially stable, I'm planning to totally overhaul my system, and then I'll be back in the game, I promise!

With a 233, it's very borderline, even with the 4 day limit, that the work unit would get completed in time. Borderline, even with the computer doing nothing else but folding. If you used it at all, for email, web, whatever, that would probably kill any chance.

It may be that, until a CPU upgrade, you might not be able to fold. http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/frown.gif

Well, I tried to start up again, but since it takes my system so long to get through even one WU, my system froze up before it completed a single frame.

My CPU is definitely not running hot. I honestly can't come up with any reason for this other than RAM, or my system for some reason just doesn't like F@H. I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times, including twice yesterday. No luck. Sigh.

When you uninstall, are you completely deleting the Folding@Home folder?
IOW, go to Add/Remove Programs, uninstall the program, go to the Program Files folder on the drive where you installed it, and delete the Folding@Home folder.
Then, reinstall the client.

At this point, I'm taking stabs in the dark to try and help you figure out where the problem lies.
If you're computer is freezing up when running the client, it's not the client. People have complained of program crashes, but if your system is crashing when running the client, something is wrong with the computer, at some level. Whether it's a hardware issue, or general Windows crabbiness, the problem is there, and just being exacerbated by running the F@H client.

so... What now??

I say all the people that have signed up already should get someone else to sign up.

Even if it is just a friend with a single home machine, every little helps... right http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif
