View Full Version : semi-rant about food stores
I know, there are too many stores in one vicinity to begin with- I heard that company is doing poorly, too

I know what you mean. where I live the only store within 20 miles (yes I live in the middle of no where) is the most expensive store I have ever seen. Also those damn safeway club cards piss me off. If you have one they are still expensive but without one they are a major rip off. And who needs to carry around yet another plastic card in their wallet. Stupid if you ask me.

Grand Union is hardly the highest priced supermarket.
Feel lucky that you don't live near a Food Emporium or Gristede's. Those places are ridiculous! It's like they take the national average price and mark it up by about 50%. 3 shoppers a week and they turn a profit.
Just in case you don't know about it, check out www.valupage.com (http://www.valupage.com) to help save some money. No obligations, like with Priceline, and you get free coupons off anything during your next visit.

20 miles to the nearest store? i don't think i could handle that - and i'm pissed cuz i have to walk five blocks?? - what's up w/me??
anyhoo, yes grand union is doing poorly. the stupid thing is, they just keep building new stores. doesn't matter what time of day or night i'm there - the place is always empty - but shop-rite is packed even at 11 p.m. when i get out of work. these people need to catch a clue ...

For a while we had Grand Union and Waldbaums a block apart and then Shop Rite a good few miles down the road. We always went to Grand Union because it was bigger than Waldbaums and we didn't want to go all the way to the Shop Rite. They've just built an Edwards about a block or so away from me and it's SO much better!

we are supposed to get an Edward's soon also. jeez, yet another store. i've heard their prices are pretty reasonable and it would be within walking distance of my house too - lucky me ...

i can't figure out why grand union is so much more expensive than shop-rite. this pisses me off to no end. and it would figure that the most expensive store on the PLANET is within WALKING DISTANCE of my house. i don't have a car during the day so sometimes i have to go there (how convenient, yet inconvenient) ...
not the most pressing issue going on in this world, but i just had to get that off my chest.

Edwards is one of the best supermarkets around. Good prices, lots of selection.
Since the merger with Pathmark, they've been sprouting up everywhere.

They've got everything and, as you said, the prices are reasonable. The one just built in Smithtown is huge with lots of parking space and now when we drive by Grand Union the parking lot is empty. It's wonderful http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif
