There's this one guy in the office who works nights. He comes in anywhere between 430 and sometime after 630. On occasions he schedules meetings for around 5 or 530. I have never once seen him be on time. He's not 5 or 10 minutes late, either. He's ALWAYS 30+ minutes late. The people he's meeting with are always on time or early so they sit and sit and sit and wait and wait and wait.
He doesn't apologize for being so friggin late either. He waltzes in, goes to his desk and finally comes out and ushers these people into meetings.
Why not at least have the decency to show up on time? Or at least apologize if you won't?
People like this just make me mad! Have some consideration!

i know people like this and after observing this behavior for a few years now, i think a lot of it has to do with the control factor. they want to call all the shots and this gives them the perfect opportunity to do just that ... "i'm controlling you now by making you wait (ha-ha)" - don't kid yourself, they get off on it.
extremely annoying - let's add this to our list of pet peeves shall we?

i've notice people are usually late when they are interviewing you
80% of the interviews i goto, i end up sitting there waiting for 20-60 minutes
have a 15 minute interview, then leave
waste of time

I remember this one interview I had. The interviewer was this middle-aged woman who was probably going through a midlife crisis. Anyway, the place was quite empty with a few people on the phone. I was applying for a receptionist job there at the time. She sat me down and asked me a few questions. After about the fourth question she excuses herself adn said she had to make a phone call. I see her go into the back room adn light up a cigarette. That's all she did! Now, as an interviewer, that was rude!!! I didn't want to work there in the first place so when she came back after 15 minutes of making me wait, she asked me another question, "do you think this place is busy at the moment?" Well, obviously I could see that it was not busy at all, but I said it looked very busy and she just ended the interview there.

I agree. It does sound like mainly control on that guy's part, but I also think that, besides being rude, he doesn't have his priorities straight. it sounds like he really doesn't want to be there but he won't quit. Maybe he wants to be fired so he can collect unemployment. Either way, he's doing it on purpose and using his girlfriend as an excuse is just lame. He's asking for touble from his co-workers. Maybe you and a bunch of your co-workers should bring this to his boss' attention. I am assuming there is someone working above him, and if so, talk to that person about getting him replaced. He is holding up your work and everyone else's work, and that is selfish and disrupting to you. If he doesn't have a boss then find another job or get the entire office to talk to him about leaving or shaping up. It's not worth it to work with someone like that.

The guy who said that about his girlfriend wasn't here at work...he was the dish installer (and this was when I lived in Louisiana)

I agree it is partly control, but it's also rude.
If I go to an interview and I sit there and wait an extra 15+ minutes I don't want to work there.
One time we were having a satellite dish installed and the guy was hours upon hours late. At the time I was working afternoons and needed to leave at about 1 and I told them this and made the appointment for 9am so it gave them time to be late because they are NEVER on time.
At about 1215 they still had not shown up. I called and they said something about technical difficulties. I said I made a 9am appointment and someone better be out here soon or I was not paying for my installation. I left at 1, getting my guy to come home and wait. The moron showed up at 2 saying his girlfriend had a sore throat. Hello? So what! I get sore throats all the time but if my guy has work to do then he has work to do! It would be selfish of me to ask him to not go to work because I was sick!
