lmao
Australia Day is the celebration of the anniversary of January 26, 1788, when the British under Captain James Cook rocked up at a harbour near where Sydney is today, and started their reign of 'colonising' the place, and committing major acts of genocide against the Aboriginal people in the process. It's basically our answer to your Independence Day, apart from the fact that no one here really gives a damn.

Uhm...sure Nap.
What's kind of a bigger deal this year for Australia, is that it's 100 years since we became a federated nation. On January 1, 1901, 6 British colonies united to form the nation of Australia, and so the government's blowing a few hundred million on 'celebrations'. Yay. Notice my enthusiasm? http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/yawn.gif

Wow, that's not much. Here, every city spends about 1 million just on fireworks on the Fourth of July...http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/lol.gif

Doh...I lost my first msg.
They'd try to spend that much on fireworks here, but they wouldn't, 'cause no one here gives a damn about Australia Day, or any patriotic feeling towards the place.
