View Full Version : nail clipping in public

i'm posting this here because *some* people find nail clipping in public gross. i, on the other hand, have a mature attitude about it.

what's wrong with it? if you collect the little chunks so no one chokes on them or something, there's nothing wrong with it. besides, they wouldn't shrink away from shaking your hand because they might touch your fingernail. what's the difference once it's off your hand? is it grosser and contaminated? no!

i do milk this for all i can, though. i was using my friend's pocketknife scissors to cut my nails in front of another friend who couldn't eat at the same table as someone clipping their nails. i wouldn't normally do it in public because so many people find it revolting (???) but that was just fun. http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/supergrin.gif

EW! Fingernails suck! Wanna know why? Cuz people don't clean up after themselves with them. I had 2 on my desk at school in English. THAT was disgusting. I don't feel like touching someone elses bodyparts that could have been...somewhere
That's probably why most people think it's disgusting. The clipping part though, if that bothers someone then they're just weird

Well, I think nail clipping should generally be done at home, over a wastebasket or at least a Kleenex to gather them in.

I definitely think clipping at work is a no-no. I used to work near someone who clipped a lot, and it always grossed me out, I could just imagine a piece of fingernail flying over the partition.

And let's not forget my most recent boss, who clipped his fingernails rather crudely with his office scissors http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/sickpuke.gif

I have a question:
How in the world do you clip fingernails with scissors? I'm not about to try it, but I'm wondering....
Wouldn't you like snip your fingertip off???

No, these were regular office scissors. God only knows how he did it without cutting his fingers, but I sort of wish he would have, it would have saved me from having fingernail pieces land in my hair http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/sickpuke.gif

Personal hygiene acts are meant to be done in private. The public wants to see the EFFECTS of your personal hygiene, but not the actions. You don't sit at your desk at work or school flossing your teeth, do you? (Gawd I hope not) Maybe I should go to the public library tomorrow to shave my legs http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/tongue.gif

My thoughts are that you should do it at home or at least very discretely, at work. No need to do it in front of everyone.

there is a need if you want the people to leave/be disgusted.

I'm not the expert in etiquette, but common sense dictates that any manner of grooming be done in the privacy of your bed/bathroom and the final product be presented to public scrutiny (whether they approve or not is inconsequential, but feeling clean and being well-groomed is a definite confidence booster)

My comment on grooming echos Ele's and Hermie's. But then...my comments on ettiquette suggest that men should still open doors and hold seats for women, too. I'm kind of old fashioned, in that way.

ditto on JH

to reiterate, i think it is extremely impolite when someone cuts their nails in public - especially when it makes noise (*click*... *click*...)

but I don't see what is so gross about the little nail clippings. you're all giving them a ( http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/sickpuke.gif ) but they're just like regular fingernails, only broken off! i don't understand. it's like people don't want to touch them when they're just regular fingernails. humph.

Splendid! I always decry the decline of etiquette in our modern society and here is a true man restoring my faith. It goes without saying that the lady should behave in a manner as to encourage the gentleman to be courteous http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif
I'm impressed Jonathan *hugs*

It's good to see that there is a lady in this world, still. This restores my faith in the idea that acting gentlemanly still has its merits.

The problem with fingernail clippings is two fold. One is a real concern for health. The other is a conditioned disgust.

1) The health issue is that these nails become repositories for dirt, grease, viruses, and other such funk. Clipping them removes a great deal of this repository and is therefore a great way to keep healthy from the flu, cold, or any such sickness. The clippings...having held these dirty things, are thus unhealthy.

2) The disgust towards waste and refuse is a conditioned one...from the early days of being told not to play in the mud to the idea of bathing and even to the extreme that fesces, urine, and vomit are filth incarnate (yet many animals will eat vomit and fesces). So....if clippings are refuse, then are they not disgusting...as society sees it?

I do find this rude and obnoxious in public places. Should be done in the bedroom or bathroom in front of a garbage basket. http://www.aliensoup.com/ubb/smilies/wink.gif

I'd never do it in front of someone either, but that's just me. They're quite clean too!
