I agree whole heartedly MrsD. I was referring to the new generations. Anyone who has put money into Social Security should get what they put into, plain and simple. It should be abolished, OR AT THE VERY LEAST, it should be optional.

Definatly should be abolished and people should get to do what they want with thier money. If you dont save up, your screwed, and its no ones fault but yours! The problem with doing this is that people, and youll have to agree with me on this, are stupid. No one but the best of us care about the future and will never save up for it. I think the government should keep social security for anone over 40 and everyone else would get social security on what they paid in up until now. We stop it now, sure it will cost us in the beginging but in the long run we, if we are resposable, will end up fine.

An idea may be that Social Security is optional - the government can take a percentage every year as a "maintenance" fee. Any thoughts?

the United States is the greatest country in the world,

It is only americans who think the us is the greatest country in the world, almost everyone else in the world would rank it in the bottom 10.

Thankfully we as Americans are offered the RIGHT to speak as we feel, and offer FOREIGNERS (many of whom have lived here for decades - raised families and sent them to college with all of the rights afforded to a naturalized citizen, while our children born and raised here cannot be afforded anything near that) the right of Visa for educational and financial gain more than any other country. We, unlike other nations, do not hold what we consider to be threats to our country in such contempt that we behead them and parade their dead bodies through the streets. We also offer the right of any person in our borders (if in fact you are NOT guilty of any crime against HUMANITY) to LEAVE and not come back, despite the financial gains incurred. We are a Democracy - something many nations are unfortunatley denied - and are ridiculed, ostracized and condemded in return. We contribute more dollars in humanitarian aid than any other country - which by the way includes the country that houses the Vatican - and continue to suffer the "slings and arrows" of any person who sees fit to sling - how many countries in this day and age would "quell" such actions? Please note that I have not in return made bad comment on any other nation. I also offer you the option to leave whenever you choose and not come back. Our country has enough of its' own difficulties than to have to put up with people who live and work here, with more rights than anyone else, and who pay nothing into our system. Go to another country and get away with that ****.

Wow, yet another shining example of why not to argue with mrsd about immigration.

Hahaha. Awesome post mrsd. Remind me never to piss you off.

This has got to be the one topic where I share a sliver of an opinion with the repulican party. Social security needs reform. But we still need it. I think Bush's reform plan is a terrible idea. It would be great if everyone were well educated and were able to invest wisely. Unfortunately, that's not the case, and if we continue along those lines to make social security completely private and optional, we're going to end up with senior citizens living in complete poverty just like they were when the program was first implemented.

Argue with me or not, I think you'll note that latley I refrain from becoming overly active in most of the hotly debated threads. There's a reson for that. So when you DO see me post as I did here, please know that I'm fired up and highly motivated. These are my opinions, and just as I respect others for their thoughts, diligent offerings and heart-felt narratives, I expect that same respect in turn.

How about we get to put it in a bank, and just earn simple interest? That would be MUCH better than what it pays now! In my opinion, Social Security should be: you get what you put in!

Each person should have a personal account. The money they take out in taxes goes into that account. You should be able to put it in a bank and simply collect interest on it, or have a choice to invest it in a select group of mutual funds, or both! You should be able to log in at any time and see what you have there. This system should be sent to start at X year, and it should only effect workers from X year on. Everyone else should continue under the old plan.

Please don't tell me this CAN NOT be done. It can be done. As I said in an earlier post, the government collects AT LEAST twice as much as it needs to actually do all the things it wants to do: CUT THE PORK SPENDING! :eusa_wall

I'm with Nova--even putting the money in a simple Savings Account will bring a higher rate of return. Or put the funds in a CD or something like that. It's a better rate of return.

And a bonus--the gov't can't get its hands on that money!
