Here is a debate that I really got into when reading the latest issue of PC World. Do you think spam should be a legal thing to do? One thing that we can all agree on is that we usually hate spam. But should it be legal or illegal is different. People are advertising like telemarketers (which Congress is cutting down on). Should spam be next? It is not harmful (usually) and it just a way to make money.
Do you think it should be illegal? If it should be, then tell me what punishment should be. :)

In my opinion, spam should not be illegal. :delight: you get a spam blocker if you want, but anything that is commercial is spam. Notifications that we should come to this site because someone replied to a post is spam in a way.. :delight:

Email spam should be illegal. First of all, the cost of advertising falls on the servers, who have to send out and receive messages all day- these advertisers are advertising for free! At least make them pay something!
Secondly, a lot of the spam out there is dangerous, and not appropriate for children. The spammers dont check who they're sending emails out to. Thousands of emails a day which belong to children are being sent hardcore pornography.
Ban the spam!

An interesting idea I read about was if you plan to mass-email over 200 emails, that they would charge you $50. :rollseyes

I get spam telling me a woman wants me to have sex with her. I get emails telling me how to increase my sex stamina. I get spam telling me to spy on my spouse and how. It is not right.

Spam is like "forced" advertising. If I pick up a newspaper, I can choose whether or not I want to take the time to browse over the ads within. Spam email invades my inbox and thus forces me to take the time to filter/delete it. It is forced upon me when I don't want it. I'm not asked whether or not I want to receive this email (in most cases). At least with the newspaper, I'm buying it and know that they are in there.
Its funny because I was talking about this with my roommates a few weeks ago before it came up. I was wondering, since the no phone list had been enforced, why couldn't they come up with a no spam list. One roommate mentioned that companies based outside the US would not be subject to any such law.

If I never give the sending company directly my email, they should have no right at all to give me mail.
It also costs corporations enormous amounts of money (time is money) to delete spam to find business emails. It isn't beneficial, and if they want to get their product bought, spend some money on real advertising.
Spam guards are faulty. Make it illegal, strike some fear into companies.
Also, just a guess, but I'd say most of the email I get at this point is from US-based companies.
