As you may or may not now, there's been a very minimally publicized civil war going on in Liberia, as well as some other African countries. Bush is going to meet with various African leaders, while there are many people, including some in the country, assessing the situation.

Many think the US should get involved, while as one can assume, many oppose. But this isn't just another Iraq. Liberia has strong historical, and even present roots with the United States. However, they are in most people's eyes, not a threat to Americans at all.

So this brings up the question, considering both recent military success (or lack there of depending on your perspective) and our history of intervening in African affairs, should the US step in, and more importantly to what extent?

yea you have brought up a really good topic. I think that atm people wouldn't even start to support more action in other countries. Perhaps America and the UN should send a type of Peace keeping force. Not to over power anyone, just to protect normal people.

As well as protection for civilians they should bring in some aid to the country, but not just Liberia. Give more 3rd World countries basic AID. thats my views on stuff, i am sure that this topic will be a good one to watch.

I would love that idea to work, but if you've ever seen Black Hawk Down, you'll know that the leaders aren't always overjoyed with their own people being fed and protected, which in turn gets us more involved when we may not want to be.

I think the African conflict is the war, but you should also look at the starving people in Nigeria, and the outburst of AIDS.

AIDS was a large part of what Bush was doing during his visit. It is a very important issue, but there's only so much the US can do alone.

It's not even that. It's more that the leaders of the countries often won't admit it's a problem. Some don't even think that HIV leads to AIDS, others blame it soley on the conditions, rather than the fact that if they would educate the people, it would be grately decreased.
